McGhee Tyson Airport · Security

How early to get to the Knoxville airport.

TYS has outgrown its checkpoint, and in 2026 lines reached outside it. The airport now asks for 2.5 hours. Here is why, when the rushes hit, and when you should actually leave home.

Short answer

Get to McGhee Tyson Airport at least 2.5 hours before departure, the airport's guidance as of June 12, 2026, and 3 hours on its busiest weekends. Security is busiest 5 to 7 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. The checkpoint opens about two hours before the first flight of the day. CLEAR is not offered at TYS.

When should you leave home?

Enter your flight time, where you are coming from and how you are parking. The planner works backward from the airport's guidance.

Leave-home plannerUses the airport's 2.5-hour guidance

Leave by 5:53 a.m.

In the terminal by 7:00 a.m.

  1. 5:53 a.m. Leave home (32 min drive + 15 min cushion)
  2. 6:40 a.m. Park in Economy and catch the shuttle (20 min)
  3. 7:00 a.m. Walk in: 2.5 hours before departure
  4. 9:30 a.m. Departure

The 2.5 and 3 hour figures are the airport's guidance (June 12, 2026, and the Sept 24 to Oct 19, 2026 surge). The parking minutes are our rough estimates: the Economy default allows up to 15 minutes for the shuttle, which the airport map says runs every 15 minutes, plus the ride. Drive times are free-flow OSRM estimates with no traffic, so keep a cushion.

When it is busy

The three daily rushes

The airport says demand peaks in three windows every day. Many travelers want early-morning departures, so a lot of flights leave in a short span and thousands of passengers reach the checkpoint at once.

5 to 7 a.m.

The morning bank. The airport cites a preference for early departures packing flights into a short window.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The midday bank. The airport's June 1, 2026 post gave this window as 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; its June 12 post says 1 p.m.

4 to 6 p.m.

The late-afternoon bank, when evening departures stack up.

Mondays and Fridays: WVLT reported on June 17, 2026 that the longest lines occur on those days during the peak windows. An airport spokesperson told WVLT that waits have topped an hour when screening machines were down, which she said is not common.

Context

Why the lines got longer

More people than the building was made for

The terminal was built for about 2.6 million passengers a year. TYS handled 3,630,410 in 2025, a record.

Flights in the same windows

The airport says airlines added flights in the most popular departure times, and a new airline (Southwest, from March 2026) made the busiest times busier.

Lines outside the checkpoint

In June 2026 the airport said queues had been extending outside the checkpoint area, something it called historically unnecessary at TYS.

Machines matter

When screening equipment needs maintenance or has an outage, the airport says processing slows further.

Flight Plan

What is being done

  1. The airport and TSA opened a fourth security checkpoint lane, according to the airport's 2019 traffic release.

  2. TYS was selected for $10 million from the final round of the FY2026 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act Airport Terminal Program to expand the checkpoint, part of Flight Plan.

  3. The airport said construction on the checkpoint project would begin this fall. Design work was under way in June.

  4. WVLT reported the expanded checkpoint is likely to be finished in 2028. A further expansion of ticketing, baggage and screening is part of the Phase 2 terminal plan targeted for 2035.

Screening

PreCheck, CLEAR and the counters

CLEAR: not at TYS

CLEAR's list of airport locations includes Pittsburgh and Nashville but not Knoxville (checked Oct 19, 2026).

TSA PreCheck

We could not confirm a dedicated PreCheck lane at TYS from a current official source. Look for the indicator on your boarding pass and ask your airline.

Opening time

The terminal is open 24/7. The checkpoint and ticket counters open about two hours before the first departure of the day, per the airport.

The airport's tips: download your airline's app, review TSA rules before you pack, watch for airline updates, and check parking availability before you leave home.

Questions

How early should I get to McGhee Tyson Airport?
At least 2.5 hours before departure, the airport's latest general advice (June 12, 2026). During the Tennessee vs Texas surge, Sept 24 to Oct 19, 2026, it advised 3 hours. The airport's older FAQ page still says 2 hours for domestic flights.
When is the TSA line longest at the Knoxville airport?
The airport names three daily peaks: 5 to 7 a.m., 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and 4 to 6 p.m. WVLT reported in June 2026 that the longest lines occur on Mondays and Fridays during those windows.
What time does security open at TYS?
The airport says the checkpoint and airline ticket counters open about two hours before the first departure of the day. The terminal building itself is open 24/7.
Does McGhee Tyson Airport have CLEAR?
No. CLEAR's own list of airport locations has no Knoxville or TYS page (checked Oct 19, 2026), and neither the airport nor local news mentions CLEAR at TYS.
Does TYS have TSA PreCheck?
We could not confirm a dedicated PreCheck lane at TYS from a current official source, so we do not state one. Check your boarding pass for the PreCheck indicator and ask your airline or TSA.
Why have the security lines been so long at TYS?
Record growth. The airport says airlines added flights in the most popular departure windows and a new airline arrived in 2026, so thousands of people can reach the checkpoint in the same few hours. Equipment outages make it worse.
Is the TYS security checkpoint being expanded?
Yes. The airport received a $10 million federal grant in June 2026 for a bigger checkpoint, part of Flight Plan. It said construction would begin in fall 2026, and WVLT reported completion is likely in 2028.
